Why does handmade soap need greaseproof paper?
A cold-process bar is still curing when it reaches the shelf. Water is leaving it, the surface is hardening and a thin film of unsaponified oil, the superfat, keeps coming to the face. On plain kraft or card that oil shows as a dark patch within a fortnight.
Greaseproof paper is beaten dense enough to hold the oil at its surface. The sheet stays matt, the print stays sharp and the bar goes on breathing through the paper, which a plastic film would stop.
The same sheet creases like tissue, so a wrap folds tight with no tape and a band holds a straight edge round the bar.
Full wrap or band: which suits your bar?
The two products in this range cover different jobs. One hides the bar and protects every face; the other shows it and carries the name.
| Format | Made for | Print | Usual pick | Worth knowing |
|---|
| Custom soap wrapping paper | Bars sold boxed or loose where every face needs covering; gift sets; bars sent in the post | All-over repeat, blank panel or single logo, 1–4 colours | 200 × 200 mm square | One sheet wraps one standard bar; folded ends tuck under with no tape |
|---|
| Printed soap bands | Bars sold on a market table or shelf where the soap itself is the display | Logo and scent on the front third, 1–2 colours as the usual pick | 50 × 230 mm | Overlaps 20–30 mm at the back; closes with a glue dot or sticker |
|---|
Choose the wrap if the bar travels, sits in a gift box or has a plain top. Choose the band if the bar has a swirl, a textured top or a colour worth showing. Plenty of makers use both: a wrap for posted orders and a printed band for market bars.
How does a greaseproof wrap fold round a bar?
- Centre the bar on the sheet with the top face down, so the overlap ends up on the base.
- Bring the two long edges over and overlap them by 20 mm; crease the fold with a thumbnail.
- At each end, push the sides in to make two triangles, fold the top flap down and the bottom flap up.
- Tuck the last flap under the overlap or hold it with a small sticker.
A 200 × 200 mm sheet takes a standard 100 g bar this way with nothing wasted. The soap wrapping paper page has the full size table against bar weights.
How wide should a soap band be?
Measure round the bar's girth and add 20 to 30 mm for the overlap; that gives the length. Width is the design choice.
- 40 mm: guest bars and samples; logo only
- 50 mm: a standard 100 g bar; logo and scent name, the usual pick
- 65 mm: a standard bar with a short ingredient line
- 75 mm: chunky or tall bars, or a full label layout on the band
Wider is not better. A 75 mm band on a small bar hides the thing you are trying to sell.
Printing on soap paper: kraft, white and colour
Kraft takes one dark colour well: black, bottle green, a deep brown. Add a second and the brown of the sheet muddies it. White stock shows a pastel truthfully and carries a two or four colour pattern without fuss.
Both papers in this range print with food-safe soy and water-based inks and we match Pantone solid-coated references. On kraft the match sits a shade darker than the swatch; the free proof shows you how much.
Text on a greaseproof sheet should stay at 7 pt or above. Ingredient lists and weights in grams are the usual small print, and they read better on white than on kraft. The guide to choosing paper weight explains why wraps sit at 35 to 45 gsm and bands heavier.
Habits that spoil a soap wrap or band
Wrapping before the cure is done. Four to six weeks is the usual wait; a high-olive bar needs longer. Wrap early and the paper darkens from inside.
Storing wrapped bars in a sealed tub. Glycerine draws moisture from the air, beads on the bar and wicks into the paper. Keep stock in an open crate in a cool, dry room.
Measuring the thinnest bar. Loaf-cut bars vary, so size the wrap or band to the thickest one. Our guide to wrapping bar soap walks through cure, storage and sizing in order.
How ordering soap paper works
Send the bar dimensions, the number of bars a month and whether you want a wrap, a band or both. A written quote follows within one working day.
Send your logo and we lay out a free proof: an all-over repeat or a blank-panel wrap, or a three-zone band with the overlap shaded. Edit it as often as you like before approval.
Printing takes 4 to 6 working days once the proof is approved; delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, tracked and takes 2 to 3 working days. The minimum is 1,000 sheets or bands. Start on the soap paper quote form.
